Distributing Oracle Software with
Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS)
Oracle8 Enterprise Edition 8.0.4.0.0
can be distributed as a software package within the environment
of Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS). Both server and
client software can be distributed this way, for any of the 32-bit
Windows operating systems. SMS integration for Windows 3.1 and
Windows for Workgroups operating systems is not currently supported.
Server and client software packages designed for SMS contain
precisely the same components as the corresponding packages in
a traditional installation. If you are an SMS administrator and
would like to distribute Oracle software with SMS, follow the
steps provided. It is important to reboot all server and client
machines after installing Oracle software with SMS.
1. From the SMS Administrator's console, open the 'Packages' window.
2. Select 'New' from the File menu.
3. In the dialog box that appears, select the 'Import' button in order to specify the package definition file (with file extension .pdf) which describes the Oracle software package to SMS.
4. Navigate to the 'SMS' directory at the root of the Oracle CD and select the appropriate .pdf file as follows:
- To install Oracle8 Server software, select the file 'ServerNT.pdf'.
- To install Oracle8 Client software for Windows NT or Windows 95, select 'Client32.pdf'.
5. Now select the 'Workstations' button to see more properties of the package.
6. Set the source directory for the package to the root directory of the Oracle CD. This is important, as installation command lines which are specified in the .pdf file are interpreted relative to the source directory.
7. You should see one or more command line options listed for the package. They are defined in the .pdf file and should be left as they are.
8. Select the 'Close' button to exit the window. Select the 'OK' button to exit the 'Package Properties' window. SMS will create the package for you at this time.
9. To distribute Oracle software, you
must create a 'Run Command on Workstation' job to distribute the
new package. You will be able to choose the appropriate command
line option for the package during job creation (for example,
Install Client/DBA for Win95 or Install Client/AppUser for Win95).
Please consult your SMS documentation for more information about
creating jobs.
Note: When you schedule an SMS job
to distribute software, the source directory that was specified
during package creation must be accessible to SMS. If you specified
the Oracle CD as the source, be sure the CD is loaded into your
CD drive during job creation.
Documentation Note: Oracle documentation as distributed in an SMS package refers to
the initial installation location in order to save client disk space. This location is the
"SMS_PKGD" directory of the SMS distribution server. As a result, the client machine
requires a drive mapping to the initial installation location for access to documentation
files. On Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, this drive mapping occurs automatically when
the documentation icon is selected. On Windows NT 3.51, this mapping must be
performed manually.
Deinstallation Note: Deinstallations via SMS are not supported in this release.
