Oracle8
Enterprise Edition Getting Started
Release 8.0.5 for Windows NT A64416-01 |
|
This chapter introduces you to Oracle8 Enterprise Edition.
Specific topics discussed are:
Oracle8 Enterprise Edition for Windows NT is an Object Relational
Database Management System (ORDBMS). Oracle8 Enterprise Edition client
and server software operates on a personal computer (PC), running on the
following Microsoft operating systems:
Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition includes a new capability
called 4GB RAM Tuning (4GT). This capability allows memory-intensive applications
running on Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition to utilize up to 50% more
RAM on Intel Architecture servers. It does this by reducing the potential
RAM allocated to the NT kernel from 2 GB to 1 GB, and increasing the potential
RAM allocated to processes from 2 GB to 3 GB. Note that this capability
is not currently available on any other Microsoft operating system.
To use 4GT for Oracle7 Server release 7.3.3 you must run the Windows NT IMAGECFG.EXE tool at the MS-DOS command prompt:
C:\> IMAGECFG -L ORACLE73.EXE
For Oracle Server releases 7.3.4, 8.0.3, 8.0.4, and 8.0.5,
there is no additional Oracle configuration required to take advantage
of this capability, nor is there a requirement that this feature be enabled
in order to use Oracle Server.
Additional
Information:
See your Microsoft operating system documentation for more information on using 4GB RAM Tuning and the IMAGECFG.EXE tool, or visit: http://www.microsoft.com |
This section describes the new products and features of Oracle8 Enterprise Edition release 8.0.5 specific to Windows NT. The following are new to this release:
See Getting to Know Oracle8
and the Oracle8 Enterprise Edition, Release 8.0 for the list of
new Oracle8 Enterprise Edition products and features common to all
operating systems.
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a standard Internet
protocol enabling certain nodes in a network, the management stations or
managing nodes, to query other network components or applications for information
concerning their status and activities. Historically, SNMP has been used
by network managers to manage and monitor networks, network devices, and
network applications. These network management tools have not been previously
available to Oracle database administrators.
Oracle SNMP Support allows a database to be remotely monitored
by any SNMP-capable management software in a TCP/IP network. This feature
enables key Oracle products running anywhere on an enterprise's network
to be located, identified, and monitored by a management station running
at a centrally located node, in much the same way and using many of the
same tools as traditionally have been used to monitor the activity of the
network itself. Oracle SNMP Support integrates the tasks of database administrators
and network administrators, enabling both to use some of the same tools
and to better integrate their tasks.
The primary benefits of Oracle SNMP Support include the following:
Additional
Information:
For information on configuring Oracle SNMP support for the listener, Oracle8 Server, and Oracle Names, see Net8 Getting Started for Windows NT and Windows 95/98. For detailed information about Oracle SNMP Support and the information it provides, see Oracle SNMP Support Reference Guide. |
Upgrading and downgrading scripts are no longer of the form
CAT*.SQL. The new names are of the form U*.SQL for upgrading and D*.SQL
for downgrading. The new naming conventions enable direct migration paths
from one release to another without having to go through multiple upgrade
paths in case there are releases in between yours and the one to which
you are upgrading or downgrading.
Additional
Information:
See Chapter 7, "Database Coexistence and Migration" for more information on these new script names. |
The Task Page provides easy access to step-by-step instructions
on performing many Oracle tasks. Tasks are grouped according to job function
at the highest level, then into sub-categories as appropriate. Find the
task you are interested in under the appropriate job category. You can
access the Task Page from the Oracle Information Navigator welcome page.
See section, "Starting Oracle Information Navigator"
in Chapter 1, "Getting Started with Your Documentation"
for more information.
Although the Oracle8 Enterprise Edition for Windows NT CD-ROM
in your kit contains many Oracle products, you may install and use only
those products for which you have purchased licenses. For additional licensing
information, refer to the Global License Terms booklet in your kit.
Oracle Support Services does not provide support for products where licenses
have not been purchased.
