Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Release Notes

Release 8.0.5 for Windows NT

1 July 1998

A64915-01

These Release Notes document important last-minute information not included in the Oracle8 Enterprise Edition for Windows NT documentation set, or in the online release notes. Topics include:

Java Runtime Environment

The Java Runtime Environment included with our release (1.1.1) is not officially certified on Windows 98 by Sun Microsystems (it will be supported in a later release). Two of our products (Net8 Easy Config and Net8 Assistant) depend on JRE. While this JRE is not officially supported on Windows 98 our testing has not uncovered problems with the use of the above products.

Oracle8 on Windows 98

If you install Oracle8 products and then upgrade to Windows 98, some products will display a warning that they may not run correctly on Windows 98.

All of the products in this release have been tested on Windows 98, and they do indeed run on Windows 98.

If you click on the Details button of this warning dialog box, a message appears telling you to call Oracle Support. Calling Support is not necessary; just click on the "Don't display this message" box. The message will no longer appear.

Oracle Web Publishing Assistant

Due to French government regulations on encryption, you cannot set your system default locale to French (Standard) in the Regional Settings Control Panel of Windows NT.

Oracle Client Software Manager Support

Oracle Client Software Manager (OCSM) support is not included in release 8.0.5.

Oracle Software Manager

Oracle Software Manager (OSM) support is not included in release 8.0.5.

Net8

See the Net8 README.NET8 and the Oracle Security Server README.OSS located in ORACLE_HOME\NET80\DOCS for additional information that is not included in the printed documentation.

Configuring Oracle Names Server with Oracle Net8 Assistant

Keep the following considerations in mind when configuring Oracle Names Servers with the Oracle Net8 Assistant:

One Listener Supporting Multiple Oracle Homes

You can use one listener for spawning databases for multiple Oracle homes. You only need to add all the System Identifiers (SIDs) to the SID_LIST section in the ORACLE_HOME\NET80\ADMIN\LISTENER.ORA file. Since the SID is unique on a system across different Oracle homes, the listener can spawn the database thread for a specific SID in the correct Oracle home, and the ORACLE_HOME parameter (used in UNIX environments only) is not needed in the LISTENER.ORA.

You can use release 8.0.5 listeners to spawn release 8.0.5 or 7.3.x databases. In a mixed environment, however, you cannot enable the use of shared sockets. Oracle Corporation recommends using different listeners for release 8.0.4 and 8.0.5 databases.

There are some restrictions in using release 8.0.5 listeners to spawn both release 8.0.5 and release 8.0.4 databases. These restrictions include:

SPAWN Command in Listener Control utilityssistant

The SPAWN command is not supported on Windows Platforms.

Using Oracle Database Assistant

If you use the Oracle Database Assistant to create a new database in a new multiple Oracle home, the LISTENER.ORA file located in ORACLE_HOME\NET80\ADMIN is updated with the SID information if you click Yes in the dialog box, but the TNSNAMES.ORA file is not updated. You must use the Oracle Net8 Assistant or the Oracle Net8 Easy Config tool to specify a new service name for the new SID.

Migrating a Database To a New Oracle Home

When a database is migrated from one Oracle home to another Oracle home, the SID of the migrated database is added to the LISTENER.ORA file located in the ORACLE_HOME\NET80\ADMIN directory for the second Oracle home, but the SID still remains in the LISTENER.ORA file for the first Oracle home. This entry can cause a conflict in the SIDs if you need to bring up both the listeners. You should either:

or

Using Connection Manager

When Connection Manager is used in an Oracle Names environment, it automatically attaches itself to every listener address registered for an Oracle Names Server. If the listener address list contains greater than or equal to five addresses, then you may not be able to connect to that particular listener through the Connection Manager. In that case you need to reduce the listener address list.

TRCROUTE Client Application

The TRCROUTE application is not supported on Windows platforms.

Net8 Open API

On Windows NT and Windows 95, use $ORACLE_HOME\NET80\LIB\TNSAPI.LIB and the include file $ORACLE_HOME\NET80\INCLUDE\TNSAPI.H.

Oracle Parallel Server

Re-installing the Oracle Intelligent Agent

If you must re-install the Oracle Intelligent Agent, ensure the ORACLE_HOME\NET80\AGENT\CONFIG\NMICONF.LST file that is overwritten contains an entry for CONFOPS.TCL. After auto-discovery is performed, the Oracle Intelligent Agent runs the scripts in this file. CONFOPS.TCL is required for OPSM.

After downloading this file execute it by double-clicking on it. Reboot your machine before running Repository Manager again. (Bugs 596961, 596976).

System Management Server

Installation Dialog

Two of the packages that can be installed using SMS (Programmer/2000 and SQL*Plus) do not appear in the SMS dialog box. To install these packages, run the batch files (located in the SMS directory) for them directly from the CD.
  • For Programmer/2000, run cltp2knt.bak (on Windows NT), or cltp2kp95.bat (on Windows 95).
  • For SQL*Plus, run cltsql95.bak (on Windows NT), or cltsql95.bat (on Windows 95).
  • De-Installation

The Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) de-installation package DEINSTAL.PDF is not available with release 8.0.5. In addition, the O8PERDBMS.PDF package does not have any de-installation options.

    README Files

You will find several README files included with your products. Though this Release Note contains all of the vital information you need, other important or interesting information is contained in the README files. README files may be included for products you did not purchase or license; their presence does not mean that you should have their products. Use your Oracle8 Documentation Library (HTML) to access all of the release notes and readme files.

    Oracle Performance Monitor

A new utility has been included in the Oracle Performance Monitor. The purpose of the utility is to enable users to change registry values without manually editing the values.

    To use the utility:

    OPerfCfg [-U <username>] [-P <password>] [-D [<database name>]]

    where:

-U is the username that Oracle Performance Monitor logs in as

-P is the password for the username

-D is the service name or database name that Performance Monitor connects to

If no parameter is specified following -D, the existing service name is replaced by an empty string (and Performance Monitor connects to the default database).

    Installing on a Cluster Drive

Install Oracle8 only on a disk that is private to and exclusively owned by the installation system (e.g. the system disk). Unless you have specific reasons to do so and understand the risks involved, do not install Oracle on a disk that could be owned or mounted by more than one system.

Advanced users using Oracle on cluster drives must refer to their Oracle Fail Safe documentation before attempting installation.

    Compressed PDF Library

The PDF (Adobe Acrobat) version of the documentation included on your product CD is compressed to save space. To use the PDF documentation, open the self-extracting PDF file located in the \PDF directory.

    Display Colors and Oracle Assistants

Oracle Net8 Assistant, Oracle Net8 Easy Config, and Oracle INTYPE File Assistant (Database Assistant and Database Migration Assistant for servers)  require monitors displaying at least 256 colors. If your monitor displays less than 256 colors  these assistants will not launch.
